Hi Folks,
Two crops in: Spuds and Sweet Potatoes. This is great for us to have these crops up and out of the ground
this early. The sooner the crop's out, the sooner we can put down cover crop seed, which can get a start
before the heavy freeze. Also, having the sweet potatoes out of the ground and into the greenhouse helps them cure for better storage and greater sweetness. The regular potatoes, on the other hand, go directly into the barn. They prefer cool, dark, humid conditions. It was a record year for potatoes here at the farm, as we planted almost 900+ in April and a cool wet season is what they enjoy. If you'd like potatoes in bulk come Thanksgiving, send us an e-mail and we'll put a box together for you. (25+ for $25). We've got baby russets, yukon golds, katahdyns, and reds.
Other news, we've ordered 100 chicks (layers) and 30 guinea hens. The layers so we can offer more grassfed organic eggs next year, the guinea hens to eat ticks around our house that would otherwise infect your farmer's family with Lymes disease. More on this later!
Here's today's harvest:
CARROTS
LEEKS
DAIKON RADISH WITH GREENS (cooking)
ACORN SQUASH
MUSTARD/BRAISING MIX/KOMATSUNA
BABY FENNEL
GARLIC
BRUSSELS SPROUTS
SALAD MIX
Happy eats,
Dan
