  Farmer Notes

17 July 2006

Hi everyone,

It's been a hot week here in the farm, and I can only imagine how hot it must be in the city. Hope you're finding a way to keep cool. My method during the working day is to take multiple ice cold showers. I basically get myself cold enough to be begging for heat, and the sun suddenly becomes a welcome sight.
Tricks of the trade!

This week is mostly about irrigation. We'll be running the drip lines for every crop before the end of the week. Drip lines allow us to put a lot of water right where the plants need it, at their roots, rather than "overhead" irrigation, which gives water to every inch of land around the crop. Drip saves water and energy, two items that are growing more and more scarce as time goes on. Why not start conserving now?

This heat is forcing our broccoli to flower a bit quickly. It might not look like the perfect stuff in the store but it tastes just fine. Remember, this ain't cal-organic. We're a garden farm, doing our best!

We'll also be transplanting the last round of sweet corn and broccoli, hoeing chard, brussels sprouts, and beets, seeding more salad mix...Tomorrow we're going to visit another local organic farm that participates in the CRAFT program for apprentice training. Hope you've been enjoying the veggies!

Here's this week's harvest:

Lettuce mix
head lettuce
broccoli
dill
scallions
cucumbers (new!)
zucchini
basil
beets
collards
