2016 recap: We had amazing Veggie Shares last season and anticipate another bountiful season in 2017! Each year has it’s standouts, but it seemed that last year, everything was wonderful! The fruits were a slightly different story, however. Although we experienced the juiciest, sweetest cantaloupes you could ever imagine, the pitted fruits failed to show up because of the late Spring frost. I think we only had 1 or 2 weeks of peaches and plums
Large vs Small Veggie Shares:
LARGE Veggie Shares: ($649.75/23 week season) ($437/15 week Vacationer’s Share) Typically include 10-14 different items each week, generally enough for a family of four, or a vegetarian couple. Note that each week, the Large Veggie shares will receive an item or 2 that the small shares do not get.
SMALL Veggie Shares: ($442.75/23 week season) ($315/15 week Vacationer’s Share) Typically include 8-11 different items and are more manageable for a one-or-two person households, or those who don’t eat at home much. Basically, they are @ 1/2 the size of our Large Shares. However, as stated above, each week the Large Shares do receive an item or 2 that the Small Shares do not get.
Another difference between the 2 sized shares is that the Small Shares are often offered a choice between 2 items while the Large shares get both items. Say for example we are given both Arugula and Spinach bunches. We may give the Small Shares the option to choose either an entire bunch of Arugula or Spinach rather than us dividing each bunch and giving the Small Shares a smaller bunch of each. It really depends on what we are given that week, how big the bunches are, etc.
Our experience has proven that the Small Share members like the opportunity to better personalize their distribution while the Large Share members are happy too because they go home with some of everything!
Know that no matter which size you choose, there is always an exchange bin set out at collection for all members to help further customize their shares. Any member may place an unwanted item(s) inside the bin and exchange for something else that a previous member has left.
Sharing/splitting a Veggie Share with a partner:
For whatever your reason(s), you can always partner up with a friend to share/split either a Large or Small Share and set it up however you want, but you must work out the pick up details between yourselves. Meaning, you can choose to come to the site together and divide the Veggie share, or you can alter weeks of picking up. You can even have one partner come early and collect the entire share, divide into 2 and then put aside the other 1/2 in a labeled box/bag for their partner to pick up later that evening. WHAT YOU CAN’T DO is come, collect 1/2 your share and expect that the other member can come and walk through to collect their 1/2. Unfortunately, we can’t accommodate that.
If you would like to split a share and don’t yet have a partner, contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Chances are we have someone else looking for a compatible partner too.
Produce we can expect
We are so fortunate to partner with Hepworth Farms as they provide many different varieties within each vegetable type. For example, they have several different varieties each of kale, broccoli, squash, eggplant, etc., and even more varieties of lettuces and tomatoes! Therefore, the list below is a simplified list of what you will likely receive should you become a member.
To better understand what we have week to week, take a look at last year’s produce photos on our Weekly Produce page!
* Please note that each week the large shares typically receive at least 1 item that the small shares do not. Because it’s sometimes difficult to divide a head of lettuce, butternut squash or the like for the small shares, we often allow small shareholders to choose between 2 similar items whereas the large share will get one of each.
