Q: I'm interested in having one or more of the optional shares but not the vegetables. Can I sign up for those?
A: No, only members who have bought veggie shares are eligible to purchase optional shares.
Q: I'm not sure I can tolerate raw milk so I'm wary of committing to a milk share. What should I do?
A: The best thing is to request a one time trial at the start of the season. Preferably, you should make this request before the season begins so you can receive it on the first distribution. You will need to bring payment with you to the site to collect. Then, if you decide to continue the share, contact Leigh and your trial payment will be deducted from the seasonal share price.
Q: I have limited resources, do you offer any payment plans?
A: After receiving a deposit to hold your share(s), we allow members to pay their balance in monthly installments. The duration of installments will depend upon the date that you sign up. Typically, all shares must be paid in full before the season begins in June. See our online membership form for options and details. If you need further consideration, please contact Bernie@creamofthecropcsa.org.
Q: What if I can't pick up my share?
A: You can have a friend or neighbor pick up your share for you any time. Simply have your substitute state your name when they check in at the site. The site coordinator will show them the drill but please remember to tell your sub to bring their own bags as we do not provide bags for anyone; members or substitutes. If you can't find anyone to pick up your share, don't worry! Your produce will go to good use by being donated to The Westside Campaign Against Hunger.
Q: I work until after six so I can’t volunteer at the site. Are there other ways I can volunteer? A: There are plenty of other ways that people can contribute from home if they need to, and it's best if you contact Bernie as soon as possible to see what other opportunities there are before they fill up. We are most often able to accommodate anyone as we are a big community and so there is always something to be done to make it even better! If you don’t volunteer on or off site, you can pay $75.00.
Q: I can¹t have night shades because of a medical condition. Can I get something else instead?
A: The CSA is as economical as it is because all members get the same share of the farm's produce every week. It isn't like a grocery store where you choose what you want. However, we do have an exchange bin at the site each week where members can put things they don't want and take something else they do want if it's in there, but other than that, we recommend giving your nightshades to a friend or neighbor! Another option is to visit our blog and see if another member is interested in trading.
Q: Is Cream of the Crop produce Certified Organic?
A: Our veggies and berries from Hepworth Farms are Certified Organic. With the remainder of their fruit they use Integrative Pest Management.
Q: I'm not sure if I'll still be in NYC when the season starts but want to be sure I don't get shut out. What should I do?
A: Our recommendation is you join as soon as you can to ensure membership. If, before the season begins, you can't fulfill your commitment because your moving away or something of the sort, we will refund your payment in full, assuming we can find a replacement. The same holds true if you need to leave us midseason. Although not 100% guaranteed, it's pretty much 99.9% guaranteed as each year we always have a VERY long waitlist with folks eager to participate.
Q: I would love a cheese or meat share but I don’t think I can go through even that small amount each week. Are there other options?
A: Please visit our Facebook page and see if there is another member whom feels the same as the 2 of you (or 3 who knows) could partner up and split the share. Note that the 2 parties would be responsible for working out payment for the share as well as pick up schedule with each other.
Q: I would love a pasta share but I can’t have eggs or I have a specific allergy that prevents me from getting some of the flavors?
A: For the shares that offer many flavor varieties like cheese or pasta, members will have several options to choose from and will more than likely be able to choose around their allergy. However, you should contact email@example.com to inform her at the beginning of the season so she can make a note of it and let the farmer(s) know.
