Greetings!
Today is a momentous occassion here at Chubby Bunny! It is Bea's first birthday! That also means it's almost time to harvest the garlic. It looks like we are going to have a good crop this year. Although we'll harvest it soon you won't be seeing it your share for a while. First we bring it all in from the field and dry it to cure it so it will keep longer. Curing it also puts more nutrition into the bulb as the leaves dessicate.
This past week we've been busy as usual transplanting (cukes # 5, summer squash # 5, braising greens, arugula, lettuce mix, beets #4) hoeing potatoes, corn, greens, beans,...also stringing up tomatoes, foliar feeding, irrigating, moving the hens and pigs to fresh grass...a bit of everything. Our sweet corn is coming along well, too. It's just starting to tassel and form ears. (Notice the photo of Tracy and Beatrice in the corn.) It looks like our corn is the earliest in the area. I think it has to do with the fact that we were transplanting it from the greenhouse while most farmers were direct seeding it into the ground. All the rain may have also caused local farmers problems with germination...I guess the test will be how the corn harvests, and how it tastes. I think we're the only farmers around growing organic sweet corn. I'm excited to see how it pans out. Can you believe we have just planted our brussel sprouts? When you are sitting around your Thanksgiving table eating them you can think of the hot sunny days of July! Just think, doesn't that seem ages away? I heard the first cicada today. Here comes the
heat of summer!
Here's the harvest:
lettuce mix, lettuce heads, broccoli, turnips, swiss chard, zucchini/summer squash, parsley/thyme, dandelion/frisee and basil
For an easy and quick supper, - our supper tonight - steam or saute chard, broccoli and zucchini. Meanwhile whip up some pesto and serve over grilled or baked polenta. Yum!!
Cheers,
