05 September 2006
Hi folks,
Looks like tomato season is drawing to a finish, all this rain and cool weather, coupled with the cool wet
spring seems to be the one two punch for killing the vines. Luckily, our third planting still bares fruit, but for how long is anyone's guess.
This week we'll be transplanting fall greens like arugula, lettuce mix, braising mix, and chard. We'll also be chisel ploughing the fields and starting to establish our fall cover crops of vetch, clover, and rye. The idea with our cover crops is to not only hold the soil frow erosion during the winter months, but build organic matter to feed the microbes and creat humus for a betterment in soil tilth. Soil likes to have grasses growing on it, and we intend to cover every last inch.
Anyone interested in half- lambs, e-mail us at thayhurst@sbcglobal.net
Our lambs are ready by the end of September. We have four or five lambs to sell, so if you're interested in a diversity of cuts, this might be a good option for you. Otherwise, it will just be ground lamb, leg of lamb, and racks. Half lambs will be $100/each.
Our grassfed organic pork will also be available for sale, more on this later.
Your share this week:
Celeriac
Potatoes
Lettuce mix
Leeks
Peppers
Hot peppers
Eggplant
Cucumbers
Tomatoes
Green beans
Corn
Suggestion: Mashed potatoes with celeriac. We made this excellent combination this week. Boil the spud chunks with the chunks of celeriac. This adds deliciousness and depth to your mashies experience. Tie it together with a bit of butter and cheese, yum!
