Volunteer Information

Volunteer!
You can help out too! Volunteers are always needed and GREATLY appreciated.
Volunteering: We believe it is important to encourage community involvement in the food system. In order to receive a $60.00 credit/refund, a member from each share, whether it's a small or large share, may volunteer for 3 'shifts' at the site over the course of the season. As many of you know, having members assist with distribution really makes our site run smoothly and efficiently creating a wonderful CSA experience for everyone!

This year there are 3 shift options, 3:00-4:30 PM, 4:15-6:00 PM, or 6:00-7:30 PM. If you are unable to volunteer during any of those times but still want to receive a $60.00 credit/refund, please contact Bernie ASAP at
bernie@creamofthecropcsa.org to inquire about committees you can be a part of or other ways you can contribute to our growing community from home!

Members who are pregnant or have given birth within the year are not required to work on or off site and will be issued an automatic credit or refund.

Once you have completed your 3 shifts, each member will receive a $60.00 credit to their CSA account which may be used towards purchases made in our web store. Upon completion of 3 shifts, a member may request that a refund be issued instead of a store credit by sending an e-mail to
nikki@creamofthecropcsa.org. Should any portion of the $60.00 remain as a credit in the member’s account at the completion of the season, a check will be issued and sent to that member.

All shift volunteers will assist the site coordinators to help make sure the distributions run smoothly each week. We have several volunteers per shift, in addition to our 4 coordinators, so volunteering is fun, easy and as stress-free as can be!

The Early shift (from 3:00 - 4:30PM) This shift is all about setting up the site and may involve some heavy lifting to move boxes of produce around. Other duties include, counting and sorting items, setting up scales for weighing, writing out the distribution signs, etc.

The Middle shift: (4:15 - 6:00 PM)
THIS SHIFT INVOLVES LITTLE TO NO LIFTING SO IF YOU HAVE ANY TYPE OF PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS OR WANT TO BRING YOUR CHILD, THIS IS LIKELY THE BEST SHIFT FOR YOU!

Middle (and Late) shifts duties may include:
** Help weigh out produce for members to collect.
** Check in members collecting fruit.
** Disassemble boxes and tie them up.
** Making sure the distribution bins are always fully stocked with produce.

The Late shift (from 6:00-7:30 PM) involves all the non-setup jobs listed above (**) as well as jobs related to closing down the site after the distribution ends at 7. Closing duties include:
  • Bringing any unclaimed items in storage bins to the food pantry in the church (these are given to New Yorkers seeking help in getting food for their families as well as by cooks who provide meals for those in need through the Westside Campaign Against Hunger).
  • Cleaning and putting away signs, scales, etc.
  • Putting the tables, benches and any other items that were moved during distribution.
  • Sweep the grounds clean, making sure the site and check in area are as clean as possible and ready for future users of the space.

Thank you all so much!
